What is LGPD?
The Brazilian General Data Protection Law (Law n. 13,709 of 2018, commonly known as LGPD) is a federal law that came into force in September 2020, which aims to protect personal information from misuse and abuse. In short, LGPD has established principles and rules to prevent personal information (which includes, for example, names, identification numbers and consumption patterns) from being used in a manner contrary to the will of the owner of said data. It seeks, therefore, to assure, to the subject of the personal information, the power of decision as to how it will be processed and used, aiming, mainly, at security and transparency.

LGPD grants subjects with certain rights pertaining to their personal data. (It is important to emphasize that the fulfillment of such rights is conditioned to its factual feasibility – that is, in some cases, for legal, regulatory or contractual reasons occasional preferences and requests of the subject cannot be fully executed).
